Messy Church is a bit of a phenomenon. It started in a small church in Hampshire 14 years ago and now thousands of churches across the world have started their own Messy Church.
They noticed that families can find going to church together difficult and when they do go along, what happens on a Sunday morning isn’t always that suitable for their family.
So, starting from scratch, Messy church came up with the idea of using crafts and games to explain a bible story, having a short, very family friendly service to talk about what everybody has been doing and then finish the time off with a hot meal which everybody eats together. The other revolutionary idea was that church doesn’t have to be on a Sunday.
We hope that St Peters Sunday services are always welcoming and inviting but we took the ‘belt and braces’ approach and started our own Messy Church. And we found there are lots of families who prefer it to the traditional services.
So, on the second Saturday of every month, between 3:30 and 5 St Peters has its own Messy Church.
Instead of pews and songsheets there is glitter, glue, cooking, games and lots of opportunities to be active.
The service includes lots of chances to join in for all ages (but you don’t have to if you are shy). We have an amazing team of cooks who prepare a meal for everybody – which is always interesting as we never know how many people will come along. Having said that, we love a challenge and the opportunity to extend a meal for 40 to a meal for 100 hasn’t defeated us yet.
So why don’t you come along to Messy Church with some children – they might be your own, your partners, your Grandchildren or even some neighbours - and see what is going on.

Messy Church has gone virtual and will be live and interactive on zoom every 2nd Saturday at 10am each month. To join us, please send a short email with the names of the children and adults attending to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be in touch before the event with the zoom number, password and a list of resources for each craft and activity.
The zoom session will last around 30 to 40 minutes and we will have a game or activity, a bible story, two crafts, a prayer and a lively, fun song! Expect to see on screen your Messy Church team (in their bright yellow t-shirts!!) to guide you through the activities and other children and families from the local community. If you have never used zoom before, you can download it as a free app and put in the number and password at the right time and it’ll take you to our Messy room.
We look forward to seeing you there!
